Assisted Dying Bill

Assisted Dying: A Difficult Decision Guided by Compassion and Safeguards

Assisted dying is one of the most emotive and sensitive issues we face as lawmakers. It touches on deeply personal experiences, beliefs, and fears—and I know how strongly many people feel.

That’s why I listened carefully to constituents before casting my vote. With over 60% of people in South East Cornwall expressing support for a change in the law, I voted in favour of the Assisted Dying Bill.

This was not a decision I took lightly. I believe that any reform must be accompanied by robust safeguards to protect the most vulnerable in our society. Compassion and caution must go hand in hand.

The proposed law would apply only in very specific, tightly controlled circumstances—providing an option for those who are terminally ill, mentally competent, and facing unbearable suffering. It is about giving people choice, dignity, and protection, not opening the door to broader practices.

I want to thank everyone who contacted me to share their personal stories, thoughts, and concerns. Your voices were vital in shaping my decision.

I will continue to follow this issue closely and work to ensure that any future legislation reflects the compassion and care that all families deserve.
