My Role on the
Environmental Audit Committee
“Protecting our natural environment is not just a national priority — it’s a local mission. From the Tamar to the coast, I’m working to ensure Cornwall’s voice is heard in Parliament’s environmental decisions.”
What Is the Environmental Audit Committee?
The Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) is a cross-party select committee that holds the Government to account on its environmental policies. It examines how policies across all departments contribute to sustainable development and climate action, and it monitors progress toward the UK’s legally binding environmental targets.
My Work on the Committee
As a member of the EAC, I:
Scrutinise government action on issues like biodiversity, pollution, climate change, water quality, and energy policy
Question ministers, industry leaders, and regulators to push for practical, science-led solutions
Champion Cornwall’s environmental needs, especially our coastal communities and rural resilience
Contribute to official reports that help shape future legislation and policy
Why This Matters to South East Cornwall
Cornwall is on the frontline of the climate and biodiversity crisis — from sewage in our seas to flooding in Looe and declining rural bus routes that force car dependency.
My work on the Environmental Audit Committee gives our region a direct voice in:
Fighting for cleaner coastlines and holding water companies to account
Supporting nature-friendly farming and sustainable land use
Pushing for investment in green jobs and skills
Highlighting the risks of climate inaction to coastal and rural areas
Recent Inquiries & Actions
Water Quality Inquiry – I challenged South West Water’s leadership directly in Parliament on discharges and rising bills
Flooding Preparedness – Spotlighted the urgent need for funding the Looe Flood Defence Scheme
Sustainable Economy – Advocated for Cornwall to lead in the UK’s critical minerals and green energy transition
